Hi,

I bought the above on ebay 3 weeks ago and just received it today ( coz of
postal strike )

When i switch it on, the lcd and power lights come on and i hear the HD
starting to work away but nothing
else happens. No Sound, Blank LCD.

I emailed the seller for advice and he started talking about bios passwords,
even after i told him there is nothing
appearing on screen.

Any suggestions would be very much appreciated

The only thing I can suggest is to re-seat the CPU. It may have worked loose
in shipping. Otherwise, a new motherboad may be needed.
HOWEVER, do make sure it is plugged in. A near dead battery will give those
same symptoms.

This is not going to help a lot but did the seller give you some kind of
warranty? If he did, demand that it be exercized before doing anything
on the machine that will give him an excuse to deny any responsability.

And next time, buy your laptop from a more reliable source than ebay.
There certainly are honest sellers there but too many things are going
on that you cannot possibly control and ratings given to sellers are
unfortunately sometimes just scams and cannot be relied upon.

What about getting your money back, because according to the item description it
doesnt work. Was there any sign of damage to the box? I'd ask for a refund.

To boot you need power, cpu, drive, lcd. Sounds like you've got
power (no need for your battery to work), you hear the drive spin up,
so either your display isn't working or the CPU isn't seated (which
means, btw, the machine's been opened - they don't just work loose).
You can attach an external CRT to confirm it's not the screen, and
use a boot floppy to confirm it's not the hard drive. Then it's time
to check the cpu - bit more work, which is why you should eliminate
the other possibilities first.
Is there a POST beep?

Most laptops (if not all) don't POST beep.

See, that's why I said MOST laptops. I've seen many more Compaqs than
IBMs (I can source Compaq Armadas and Evos much cheaper than Thinkpads),
and none of them POST beep, but I'm not sure about IBMs.

Bzzzzzzzz, nope, I'm sorry, that's not correct. We have some lovely parting
gifts for you. Johnny, tell 'im what 'es won...

Nothing!!

Most, if not ALL, IBM laptops POST beep. The model specified in the post
(600E)does POST beep.

Thanks for all the replies,

After charging battery last night i can now boot up ok
I ran all the bios test and everything is ok

The only problem now is when using laptop for any length of time
The screen screws up and mouse pointer goes out of control
Think it may be HD or CPU or Battery being loose
will try to take appart and put together again.

Any other ideas appart from that
Thanks a lot

I see it really makes you feel good being rude. I wrote in another post
that my experience is somewhat limited to Compaq notebooks, and they do
not POST beep, and besides, I did say "most" laptops, not all laptops.

Enjoy making a lot of friends with your attitude.

Plus, ThinkPads don't *always* POST beep. The hardware volume control
(Fn+PgUp/PgDn on a 600) affects the POST beep along with all other sounds.
If this control is turned all the way down (muted) the ThinkPad will boot
silently.

Rude? No, rude would have been something like, "NO, YOU'RE WRONG DUMBASS!! If
you dont know about Thinkpad 600E's, why did you answer?" Develop a thicker
skin guy... Game show host answer was to keep it funny.

And Compaq is just ONE mfg.... how does that equal "most"?

I have lots of friends, in person and online, and they like my attitude just
fine.

Mike, does a 600E POST beep, yes or no?

It does if the hardware volume control is turned up. It doesn't if the
hardware volume control is turned all the way down (muted). Same thing with
the resume-from-standby beep.

What? !! He's not being rude, he's being funny. You know - good

the answer is yes, it does beep. yeah, yeah, if it's not muted. It's built to
POST beep.

Isn't that what I just said, twice? The 600E does POST beep if the sound is
not muted. It doesn't POST beep if the sound is muted with the hardware
volume control.

The point is that absence of a POST beep does not necessarily indicate a
hardware problem. It could merely mean that the sound is muted--and you have
no way of knowing which by looking at the machine.

Of course, all of this is irrelevant to the OP's situation, since the other
symptoms made it clear there was a hardware problem.

Don't go there, now... There are plenty of good vendors on eBay, and
every time I bought something there, I got exactly what I asked for :) Of
course, I knew what I was getting into, so that helped.
