I was wondering if the 6 pin connectors were optional, or can i just plug in the graphic card and run the software. New to computers please help.

ok and it goes to the power supply? and if i do not have an extra plug than would i have to buy a split?

You MUST plug in the 6pin connectors. You can purchase 4pin to 6pin adapters pretty cheaply. Doesn't the card come with adapters for you though?
