Hello everyone,

I am thinking about upgrading my computer's processor from core 2 duo 6750 (2.66 GHZ) to a Q9550 or a Q 9650 in the near future.

you think its worth or should I w8 till I finally buy a new Tower?

will I spot any significant difference in performance and will it make my pc efficient for one more year ir two?

What programs are you running? Any chance of overclocking the E6750?

Chances are you'll only see a very small improvement upgrading to a Q9550 or Q9650 unless you're talking about certain audio, graphics or video processing programs.

Well, thanx for the charts... I don't do video processing and such stuff. I do game with games like football manager that require core power and can take advantage (i think) of a 4-core processor. I would also like to see my PC performing better when I ran multiple programmes simultaneously.

I think I can overclock my processor but i dont know much about overclocking, never done it in the past.

I think both my mobo and RAM are quite good for overclocking.

MOBO: GA-X38-DQ6

RAM: Corsair dominator (1066 MHZ)

This should be your first stop.
HOWTO: Overclock C2Q (Quads) and C2D (Duals) - Guide v1.6.1
http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/ [...] uals-guide

This should be your second stop. You need to know something about thermal management or you can fry your CPU. It's actually kind of difficult to fry a modern CPU, but it is possible.
Core 2 Quad and Duo Temperature Guide
http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/ [...] ture-guide

You will need better cooling. Here are two under $50 heatsinks that are pretty popular:
Sunbeam
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6835207004
Xigmatec Dark Knight
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6835233029

They both require a somewhat different approach to applying thermal compound.
Suggestions for applying thermal compound:

And they are pretty large, so they might not fit inside your case.

Go through the first two threads. Do not do anything until you have a good idea about what you are trying to do. Once you have definite questions (you will, you will :)), come back and ask.

Keep in mind that these are guides, not cookbooks. YMMV. Your Mileage May Vary. Because of all the variables, you may not do as well as someone else with a similar system. Or you might do better.

Thank you for your help, but for now I can't try anything since I wll give away my memory kit in order to be replaced by warranty. I will study what you posted and I will have questions for sure :D .

P.S. I wasn't even born in 1978! :kaola: !

if you run more than 2 programs then the Q9550 or the Q9650 would be a good upgrade. Frankly right now the Q9650 is $100 more than the Q9550 and the gains from a Q9650 compared to the Q9550 is very slim. But if you were into overclocking then get the Q9650 due to it's 9x multi.

Q9550 is a great chip. Get a decent cooler and it will also overclock very well on your chipset - 4Ghz should be a possibility.
You won't see much of a jump at stock speeds until you are multi-tasking or using multi threaded apps, but there are more of these coming out all the time and the Q will be a great uprgade for future-proofing your rig for a while.
You could also just drop some cash on a good cooler and overclock your E6750 to get you a boost but you are more likey to top out around 3.6Ghz with that chip, as its older and hotter. Depends whether you want to spend a small amount of cash now to tide you over for a little while, or spend a little more - go for the Q and aim to make it last a bit longer. I would go with the Q9550!

well thanx a lot for your opinions. I think that what i will do is to try and overclock my current processor and after some time I will purchase a Q9550 and maybe a Q9550S!!!

A smart move. I think you just saved yourself £150+.
I don't think you would have seen the kind of performance increase you'd have expected for that amount.

yeah man, I am still using an E6600 oc'd to 3.4. It is still nice and speedy. No need to get a quad yet if you are gaming.
