Did you get all 13 screws on the bottom? (Including the four under the
rubber feet?
If so, then you need to open the display, turn it over, and pry back
the spring-loaded catches that hold the back edge of the keyboard.
These are in the battery compartment.

Pry one, push against the keyboard via the hole nearby. then the other
side. Watch out that the keyboard doesn't fall on the floor.

Turn it over, flop the keyboard over. You'll find one more top cover
screw in a recess under the keyboard (upper left)

Work the keyboad cable from under the tab and unplug it. You'll also
have to get the cable(s) for the touchpad and switches.

Release the back edge of the top cover via the latch in the center
(Rear edge of battery compartment), Lift the back edge, and
wiggle/slide it toward the front CD-drive end) to release two large
hooks along the front edge. Do not attempt to lift the front edge
straight up, it has to slide.

This is what's inside:

Sony uses teo types of drive, and they both use different mounting
hardware and cable, The new one will have to be the same make and form
factor. The drive in this one is the Toshiba MK3004GAH. The other
one (Hitachi?) has the connector along the "side"

(The 802.11 card is under the CD-ROM drive.)

Have you found a good deal on a MK4004GAH by any chance?

Found a screw under the keyboard and to get to that screw, I had to
peel off the void warranty sticker. Since it is out of warranty
anyway, I have no choice but to peel it. But now, I realize that the
hard drive is smaller than I expected. It is a 1.8mm hard drive made
by Toshiba. I search Ebay but no one seems to have them. Well, at
least that is some progress...

Toshiba tech support reply saying that I need a firmware upgrade for
the drive. for cost of $45 Does that sound reasonable?

No. Most hard drive manufacturers make firmware upgrades available
for free on the net.

If you need to replace it, you may as well get the 40GB version,
MK4004GAH. I've been thinking of upgrading mine.
