Hey Hey!

While angrily browsing through the BIOS today I noticed my core speed was at 3166.6mhz, and everest reported this as a 6% Overclocked CPU. The CPU is an Intel QX9650 at default voltage (bios AUTO). I have never even attempted to overclock this CPU, but it's multiplier was set to 9.5 and I know I haven't touched it.

My system is unstable to the point of being useless. It freezes at random (no BSOD) and I have to manually restart it.
Can this cause system instability? and with the voltage set to Auto, can it cause problems?

System:
QX9650 on Nforce 790i ultra (P08),
4x1gb RAM Linked and Synced, P1 & P2 enabled
GPU : Radeon 5870 (Switched from 9800 GX2, but the problem still persists).

Any and all help is greatly appreciated!!

EDIT:

I forgot to mention, my core temps are:
36 / 36 / 32 / 32

Register or log in to remove.

the temps are normal but lower ur Clock speed a bit to 2.8 or 2.6 you won't see much difference but it might start to actually run

if it doesn't work maybe RAM or Mobo

RAM: if this is the prob then try booting with one stick at a time

Mobo: u have a NVIDIA mobo this maybe the prob, Nvidia mobos alwys have problems if the other two solutions don't work it might be this one.

Try clearing CMOS, then reload BIOS defaults and save.

If that doesn't work, follow it up by manually dropping the multiplier to 9.

If that doesn't work, let us know what vcore is (Core Voltage as shown by CPUID's CPU-Z). Download that software from here:

PS: Do you have any programs installed that are capable of overclocking from Windows?
