First: My apologies for the bad attitude. I've turned over a new leaf and I'm hoping to be a kinder, gentler Lingus.

I have started this thread because this one is beyond repair (please do not post - no one can see it). Please feel free to post questions, comments, etc here. This is the place for all things Folding and Toms.

What is Folding @ Home? It is a distributed computing project that is a great way to utilize unused CPU and GPU cycles for science. Here is Vijay Pande to explain some of the history.

SWF file

Tomshardware is in the top 100 folders worldwide, but we need your support. Please download a client and install it. GPU and SMP (multicore setups) produce the most points, but SMP can be tricky to install. The simple windows clients are best for those who are less technical. It doesn't cost a thing. It's fun and addictive, plus you may actually cure cancer! Installation questions can be directed this way (99.99% of all questions have already been answered) or post right here. I will try to answer PMs as well.

A list of links will be forthcoming pending some interest in folding.

Remember, nvidia gpus score much higher than AMD, and if you're careful, you can run SMP and GPU simultaneously.

The best website I've found for monitoring stats is at extreme overclocking:

Also to get the most PPD for i7 and other quad-core setups, it is best to run the linux A2 client (or whatever is newer). Though this would be advisable for advanced users, as some setup a Virtual Box on top of Windows just to still be able to use the machine for day-to-day tasks.

I was wondering when you guys were going to start one of these threads, I completely forgot about folding for the longest time and figured I'd start it up again whenI saw a THG Folding thread randomly on google.

Just started folding for Toms a few days ago and I just past 5k [Raidur_TH] using SMP on my sig setup. Going to be adding in my moms PC in a day or 2 (Q6600/8800GT) SMP/GPU.

Is anyone getting an 'attempting to get work packet' issue where it just seems to do nothing but try to contact a server that does not respond and if so what can be done to resolve it?

Yes, I get that from time to time.
Usually, after restarting the client, I can get it to connect.
Anyone have an explanation for this issue or a decent, preferably automated, workaround?

Mine just keeps retrying, restarting the client makes no difference in my case. Is it possible to 'force' another server to issue work or not?, I have trawled around various forums but have yet to find a way that works for me although to be fair it's not a major issue I just get cheesed off when it's on the 101st retry.

i got those issues when i tried to run a few clients on one machine... one just would NOT connect. have you tried using a different client? if you use cmd line version, try the install one and visa versa.

I've tried with the cmd line on it's own, the sys tray on it's own and the GPU1 & 2 clients on their own and in various combinations of clients running at the same time but the issue still crops up from time to time and I just wonder if anyone has found a way to force a connect to a different address.

Folding@Home seems to be making my video driver stop responding(im running the GPU client) it has done it a bunch in the last few days. I figure you guys might know, is there a conflict between the ATI 9.9 drivers and the folding client or something? I have just been leaving it on when i go to class but it seems when the driver crashes it stops folding which isnt very helpful.

Running xp 32? If so check here and follow the link for the experimental CAL DLLs.

If not, post specs OS, VPU, etc.

Why list any but the best :D
I figure the layman will get quite a bit more WU's completed after reading those guides than simply running a standard CPU or GPU client.

Sorry ninja, I thought the giant logo at the top of the linked pages would be enough to credit xcpus.
I have edited my above post to credit Xtreme CPU for everything.

Unfortunately not :(
Seems you can type 'xcpus' just fine but as soon as you add '.com' or post a link it is filtered.

Hey guys, check this out: There is a new beta SMP client out there that is pumping out something like 25,000+ PPD! It looks like you need 8 cores, though some are running it on high end i7s with HT on.
If anyone is interested and has the hardware.

Bigadv WUs are pretty awesome. You get more points the faster you complete them. If you manage to do it in 2 hours (ie. you run a supercomputer) you get 10x the normal points. The big points bonuses start at about 30 hours an increase rapidly from there.

002 hours = 10X
003 hours = 9.8X
004 hours = 8.49X
005 hours = 7.59X
006 hours = 6.93X
007 hours = 6.41X
008 hours = 6X
009 hours = 5.66X
010 hours = 5.37X
020 hours = 3.79X
030 hours = 3.10X
040 hours = 2.68X
050 hours = 2.4X
060 hours = 2.19X
070 hours = 2.03X
080 hours = 1.9X
090 hours = 1.79X
100 hours = 1.7X
110 hours = 1.62X
120 hours = 1.55X
130 hours = 1.49X
140 hours = 1.43X

I don't think it affects the first few WUs that you turn in, you need to be a "reliable" -bigadv folder.

Nice job. I just started F@H with both of my GPUs. I'm up to ~173,000 pts and 319 WU. The points add up fast when using both GPUs. Usually 16K pts/day and 14K points/day when doing 1888pt units.

I think so, but you will need the latest core. I think Fahcore 11 requires manual download.

Try this link: http://foldingforum.org/viewtopic.php?f=52&t=12215 for more info.

Of course this is assuming your PSU has enough juice and you don't have a heat issue. :D

I think a 750W Corsair can handle it just fine. Thanks for the link.

I think if they start doing that then they better spend the money on creating their own super computer instead because everybody would then start asking for money. The advantage with their current model is that it is mostly funded by human conscience or good will, which is technically free.

That's why they have the printable certificate. :D

That depends on what project a person is attached to as there are some distributed computing projects where ATI cards score much higher than NVidia.

Collatz Conjecture comes to mind as one.

Here, Here.... just (12/25/09) finished my Emerald (1cpuYEAR) eBadge for processing ProteomeFoldingII with BOINC's WCG. Will return to Proteome for year 2 (Sapphire) when i've finished Emeralds in other 6 studies that are still active.
Currently working on Emerald for AIDS(mid Jan) and Nutritious Rice (end Jan).
12/25/09 was my 1st Anniversary with BOINC-WGC that i dedicated to my dear friend who passed away 08/09 frm colo-rectal cancer. AMEN, and RIP.
The below listed machines produce 10cpuDays of work daily. All run 24x7.
On 12/25 i got my 8th machine up and running (see post "Can eMachine be forced to boot frm USB" ). Currently have:

Intel dualcore 3.00Ghz w/2G RAM [Built (08/09) for daughter and runs remotely at her house]
Intel D 2.79Ghz w/4G RAM
HP Laptop(Dual) 1.81Ghz w/1G RAM
Intel 1.24Ghz w/1.5G RAM
Intel ?(HomeBuild) 733Mhz w/.5G RAM
3x566Mhz Celeron eMachines (all the eMachines were donated to me for this cause. A 4th is promised in January)
All but the eMachines are / were work machines.
Folding and other studies seemed like a righteous way to burn out these unused cores

Congrats on EVERYONE's crunching efforts.....let's hope distributive computing can make one of the current health scourges as historical as polio in 2010!! :wahoo:
