Hey guys! I have a question my firewall isnt working and gives me this error Windows Firewall settings cannot be displayed because of the associated service is not running. Do you want to start the windows firewall/ICS service? I went into safemode ran spybot search and destroy and it caught this windows firewall over ride and avast over ride thing. I deleted it and rebooted but still has same error. Also, my internet isnt working. I have trued 3 ethernet cords and a different wireless router but not the fix. BTW I am using my Sisters laptop

What fixed my problem on a windows vista home edition machine were the following 3 .reg files:
bfe.reg, firewall.reg, and 0677.mpssvc.reg. The machine had had a rootkit virus, which I removed with kaspersky's tdsskiller and their rescue disk. 0677.reg re-enables the security center, and the other two re-enable the firewall. You can find bfe.reg and 0677.mpssvc.reg for download, and instructions on how to use them--you have to run regedit and services.msc too-- on

http://blogs.technet.com/b/asiasupp/archive/2011/12/27/error-code-0x80070424-with-windows-firewall-and-quot-base-filtering-engine-service-quot-not-available-in-services-database-list.aspx

You can find a link to the firewall.reg file on

First you might want to run microsoft's fixit file, which enables some other registry keys, available from http://support.microsoft.com/mats/windows_firewall_diagnostic/

If nothing else works you can always do a windows repair.

I have seen this problem and all the solutions listed are for Vista and Windows 7. These won't work on XP though. What finally did after I got rid of the virus that caused this by using combofix and malwarebytes was to copy the sharedaccess reg key from a know good machine and replace the one on the bad machine.

Here is the key:
