Hey all! I was hoping to run to my local Fry's Electronics tomorrow and spend the $100 in gift cards I got for Christmas there, to buy the x3 720.

I had hoped to only spend $200-$250 of my own $ on the rest (mobo and RAM) as I also got the Intel 80 GB x25 SSD G2 for Christmas, and I was planning on building a new rig with the X3, the SSD, a new mobo, RAM, and then just using the components I have currently in my Pentium D setup from Dell from '05 (well, that and the GeForce9800GT I bought a few years ago).

So, I had been told that the http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6813128392
and 4 Dimms of the http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6820231144

Were two good components to get, but I wondered if this was the best?

I was then told that this other one plus DDR3 RAM was better: http://www.frys.com/product/5959834

For some perspective, I want something that is good at stock, but with the slight possibility of unlocking that pesky 4th core, I heard you needed a different North or South bridge on the mobo.

Also, I've never ever OCd a system before, but I'd like to try. Besides these 3 components and the 2.5" --> 3.5" bay converter for my SSD, what else would I need? The CPU comes with a fan...what would I need to make the whole system as quiet as possible, and run cool so I have the possibility of overclocking? new fans? are my Dell case fans OK for this? they've kept my 130W Pentium D cool for 5 years...

In addition, is there a better mobo/RAM combo anyone can think of for around the same price as the above 2? can anyone make a compelling argument to spend the extra cash on the x4, and if so, how much extra are we talking? Thanks!

Fry's has 2x2gb of corsair 1600 ddr3 for $89.99 in the dallas ad today; may also be good at your local frys. Other possibility is to wait for Monday's ad and see if they have any combo deals you're interested in. Wed may definately have a new combo deal, but you say you need it by tomorrow. So the memory is my first choice for the gift card.

Hey, I think I'm going to get the MSI mobo I linked to since it's in stock at Fry's with my gift card, run over to Microcenter and get the Phenom II CPU, but I'm still undecided on the RAM, since they're out of http://www.frys.com/product/5994644 . I'd actually be willing to spend the extra $ to get whatever I need today, but I want to be sure I still have overclockability options. What about http://www.frys.com/product/600908 [...] IN_RSLT_PG ? Is there something else (preferably in stock at the chicago store) that anyone recommends? What about the closeness of the RAM to the CPU in that MSI mobo? will that effect the overclockability? would anyone reccomend any other RAM? please get back to me ASAP, I hope to leave in the next half hour!

Looks like the same ram for $89.99 in stores. Don't spend $109.99. Check the denab 925 combo special for $159.99 after rebate. It may be a good option compared to the 710.

o1die:

I walked into fry's looking to buy this memory no matter what, since i just wanted to be done buying components, and i walked out with the deal you specified! thank you for bringing it to my attention!!! You saved me a bunch of money :)

So, I ended up with 2x2GB corsair DDR3 1600 RAM, the Phenom II X3 720 BE, and the MSI 790GX-G65 AM3 . You'll all be hearing from me later with tips and tricks to put this thing together, and to OC it in the future, too!
