Hi, I'm planning to over clock my CPU BUT not yet, if I did OC will it be stable,or will it short the lifespan? I want to OC so that I can use it for long time rather me buying another CPU later on year if it dies (if I OC)

CPU: 990x @ 3.46ghz
Cooler: Noctua DH-14

Or is it ok like this at stock speed?

Thanks

Yeah unless you're doing really heavy gaming, 3.4Ghz is all you really need (anything higher is really just bragging rights). It won't make that much of a difference anyway plus it will void your warranty.

Depend on how you look at it... Your chip is actually designed for overclocking, hence why the multiplier is unlocked. If you overclock the correct way, you'll be looking to retire it before it dies . I just said in another thread about my old Q6600 that was overclocked literally from day 1 for 5 years and still going strong.

If you push the living snot out of it, yes it can significantly lower the life of the chip, especially if temperatures get too hot. More reasonable or modest overclocks can almost always be achieved while maintaining specs well within the"safe zone" for voltage and other settings with appropriate cooling.

I noticed about a 12 FPS differnence from 3.4 to 4.2 using heaven benchmark @ 1280x768@75Hz, 4xAA, tesselisation normal, 16xAAF...the 3.4GHz setting gives me a score of 834@32 FPS while 4.2 gives me a score of 1108@44 FPS
