I'm trying to fix my friends PC but i'm having a bit of an issue figuring out the problem.
Basically this is the situation and what i have done so far. I connect the PC to the power and the monitor. the light turns on when I push the power button but either the processor or the heat sync(not sure which one) starts vibrating violently for a short time then stops. the fan keeps running and the PC seems so be powered on however nothing comes up on the screen. I removed the CPU and the heat sync then replaced it back on the mobo but nothing changed. i also removed the CMOS battery for 30 seconds and replaced it, still the same issue.
Im really stumped on this one and any help would be appreciated. Thanks

ok is it a amd or intel cpu /heat sink

does it turn off after so many secs of being on
have u checked ram/ graphics card
make sure all psu plug are connected to their ports right and not out or in the wrong spot
if intel make sure heat sink is secure and contacting against the cpu
how many ram sticks?
if more than 1---- take 1 out and try and boot see what happens remove that 1 and put the other 1 and and try the same
does it have a on board graphics card or a pcie one if so try connecting screen to onboard gpu
is the pc brand new or old did u build it today or was it prebuilt?
can u give some specs on

power supply
cpu
motherboard
ram

It is an amd based system.
Yes i checked the ram and it seems to be fine, it only has on board graphics.
It is a generic compaq pc, the model is compaq presario sr2020nx
I'm not really sure when it was purchased but I'm sure its not new
CPU: AMD Athlon 64
PSU: Bestec 250W
Mobo: Not sure
Ram: x2 DDR2 256mb sticks

I tried your suggestion but nothing seems to have changed, im beginning to belive the the cpu/heat sync might be bad because when i turn it on for the first time in a while it emits a strange sound almost as if its vibrating then goes quiet and shuts off within 10 - 15 seconds. after the first attempt it no longer vibrates but simply shuts off in the same time frame.
