wanna choose from either of the two...

price difference not a problem...

reliability counts... should process faster...

i don't mind paying extra for the phenom but is it worth it ??

planning to use it in my gigabyte ga-ma785gm-us2h

Both will be reliable. The only real difference between the 2 is the L3 cache (and stock clock I guess).

What are you going to be using the PC for?

I'd say the PhenomII 245 if any gaming is going to be done.

hey thanks there.... i'll be using it for light gaming... and for other ordinary purposes like browsing, to complete my college projects... that's all... i don't wanna upgrade for another 2-3 yrs.. so i thought i'll go for the phenom for better future proofing..

the athlonx4 is a killer man... i am very impressed with the price/performance of that chip. i would go that route and overclock as necessary as years come :)

so u suggest an athlon is way better than a phenom ??
i was more interested in unlocking the cores to make it a quad core...

so if don't have enough luck then it would be a waste to buy a phenom i guess...

what do u guys think ??

hey!
we share the same name--guess ur from india--if ur based in mumbai--athlon2 x4--quad core 630@ 2.8ghz and 2 mb l2 cache sells for about 6000rs--dirt cheap!! would make a good cpu for the next 2 years if you don't plan on upgrading!

------------------------------ AMD Dual Core Opteron 175 @ 2.2ghz(Stock)
Asus A8N-E(socket 939 Nvidia Nforce 4 Ultra)
Galaxy Geforce 8800gt 512mb

if u intend to unlock ur phenom 2 --the 550BE along with an asus/biostar board would give u the best results.
get a good cooling solution--i would recommend the sunbeamtech core contact cooler 120 @ 2500rs.

i stay in bangalore... the athlon ii retails for about 3.5k and the phenom 545 for 4.4k...

i was very apprehensive to spend anything more than 4 k for a processor due to a very tight budget concerns...

I have a athlon 240 and I must say it is an absoluterly cracking chip , mine runs at 3.2 ghz and stays very cool , if I were you tho I would go for the athlon 2 x4 , the fact that its 45nm makes it a great buy

athlon aims for mainstream use
phenom aims for gaming or enthusiasts
performance wise they are pretty much the same

hey i am from mumbai!
i do understand the tight budget scenario , abhishek.but the athlon 2 x4 quad cores are priced at 5500 for x4 620 @ 2.6 ghz and 6000 for x4 630 @2.8 ghz.
the problem with the 550BE phenom is getting the proper board to unlock the 2 cores.biostar and asus have certain board which can do that--but then on going through other forums --the rate of success in unlocking these cores using those specific boards are variable and not constant.
i guess a 1000rs more wouldn't hurt---tht's like sacrificing 2-3 pizzas --or giving up on a movie date with your gf! borrow it from someone/family and get the athlon x4.
