and a EVGA GTX 260 graphics card. It appears that Radeon graphics cards are showing more promise recently. I am seriously considering purchasing a Radeon 5770 or a 5870 instead of buying another GTX 260 for SLI.
Does my motherboard support crossfire? I heard that all X58 motherboards support both SLI and Crossfire but I don't see it in the product descriptions. Has anyone had success mating the EVGA X58 LE mobo with Radeon cards? Single and crossfire??
If my motherboard can indeed support this, I think I may surrender my Nvidia fanboyhood and move over to the dark side...
Your MoBo is X58 so it should support both XFire and SLI . It lists PCI-E support as 4 (@ x16/x8/x4/x8) which is kinda unusual way of presenting the info. Normally it wuld be 2 x 16, 1 x 4 and 1 x 1 or something like that. I am gonna guess tho that if you only use 2 of the 4 slots, you will get full SLI / Xfire but checking the SLIzone site for example, i don't see that MoBo listed.
The 5770 would give you a drop in performance compared to your current 260
But we don’t have that luxury with the Radeon HD 5700 series. The value of the 5770 in particular is clearly not going to be in its performance. Compared to AMD’s 4870, it loses well more than it wins, and if we throw out Far Cry 2, it’s around 10% slower overall. It also spends most of its time losing to NVIDIA’s GTX 260, which unfortunately the 4870 didn’t have so much trouble with. AMD clearly has put themselves in to a hole with memory bandwidth, and the 5770 doesn’t have enough of it to reach the performance it needs to be at.
If you value solely performance in today’s games, we can’t recommend the 5770. Either the 4870 1GB or the GTX 260 would be the better buy.
AMD believes that DirectX 11 is the key to the success of the Radeon 5700 series, and in a way they’re right. If DirectX 11 takes off quickly, then buying a 5770 over a 4870 or GTX 260 right now would be a wise buy. But that’s a future that’s hard to predict, and something we got burnt on somewhat with DX10 and DX10.1.
So here’s the bottom line for the 5770: Unless you absolutely need to take advantage of the lower power requirements of the 40nm process (e.g. you pay a ton for power) or you strongly believe that DirectX 11 will have a developer adoption rate faster than anything we’ve seen before for DirectX, the 1GB 4870 or GTX 260 is still the way to go. Or to put things another way, outside of those two circumstances we’re still at status quo. A 1GB 4870 will continue to be a better choice until the price difference between one of those on sale and a 5770 drops below $10-$15, at which point we could justify rolling the dice and paying a bit more for the 5770. AMD is their own enemy here, which means we aren’t going to be very surprised if we see the 4870 go away very quickly once the 5770 is plentiful.
So i think what it comes down to is....
A new 5870 for $400 or adding a 2nd 260 for about $180....the 5770 just doesn't fit into this picture very well.
WOW, thanks Jack. That was much more than what I was expecting. You've def shed more light on this situation. Kinda odd that (ATI) they left such a gaping hole between the 5770 and 5870. The price difference is pretty drastic. Or is there a model between the two I don't know about?
I was a bit blinded by the whole DX11 feature and after reading that article, it's making me think twice. Thanks for your unbiased info.
I have a 5850 and while I love it... I still wouldn't consider it a necessary/smart upgrade from a GTX260. Obviously the 5850 is the better card, but not by a large enough margin to justify the $300+ asking price. If you can sell your old card for a large portion of that... MAYBE... just MAYBE... but if your current card isn't meeting your needs then you really should be looking at the higher-tier cards (5870/5970 or the 295)
To my mind the 58xx series is the entry point for DX11. As can be seen in THG's Dirt2 article, the 5770 chokes on the DX11 implementation at 1920 x 1200. Having a DX11 label on a card that can't play even current DX11 games, isn't really future proofing.
