Rib vs Flange Type Fans

I know how both look but what's the purpose or difference or reason why manufacturers would make 1 or the other?

Also if I were to cut the rib section out would this affect the fan in anyway?

Rib type is uncommon and since they do not allow the use of any type of screws/mounts, in that mind is not recommended. Gel mounts are highly recommended for this type.

Flange type is the most usual and you can use almost any type of screws/mounts with it.

Since the holes are the same 3mm width it won't do anything bad if you do cut the ribs, but you will be able to use other mount types as well with it. ^^
