Ok so... As far as I read:
i5 is a better cpu then Phenom II 955 by ~15 seconds for things like encoding/zipping/wtv.
But Game talking, I find it unacceptable that A new generation CPU like the i5 still has problems fighting a Phenom II 955... In some games, Phenom II even has the advantage...
Now if we talk about the most important gaming value lately : Crossfire.
Basicaly, buying an i5 equals buying a phenom II Gaming talking, BUT we lose performances on the Crossfire platform. I5 only supports dual x8.
That is quite a loss.... I mean if you bought a GTX 260 or a HD 4890, Just buy another for 180$ CAD (the current price) and you have the power of the HD5870 (cuz we all know DX11 is still a bit far...Nvidia can block AA on games like Batman, they can surely create a blockus on DX11 games and they already predicted 9 to 12 months before DX11 titles will be released so they probably hidden something.)
Now This is quite known over the internet, but gaming wise, the intel cpu's are not very "consistent" like the AMD are...
They might get higher FPS, but with lot of variances....
Id rather play a full 40-35 fps game rather then a 60-30 fps game.... The whole decreasing makes the game look unplayable and that is a real drawback. I think that is why they invented FPS stabilize thingy (that put a maximum of 60 fps so that the game doesnt constently change quality depending on whats hapening..) But here, the limit IS 60. And when u drop to 30 out of nowhere, it will look WAY worse then just playing on 40-35 fps.
I saw quite a few benchmarks of the HIGHLY biased [H], And they showed the truth even tho they wanted to make the phenom II look lame: A phenom II 940 had better constenti then the i7-920.
And the good news are, AM3 is not a dead socket, its just starting. Were soon getting 8 and 6 cores. while the LGA1156 next line of cpu is the i5-670 i think, wich comes with less cache (Very bad for gaming).
Well of course, This thread is Gaming related so please restrain from stupid comments such as "anyone going Phenom instead of i5 is pure fanboy" or "i5>phenom II anytime".
There is no fanatism here, only real. pure. facts.

What do you think of this?
Well the only time im gonna upgrade my 955 BE in the near future is if the proposed 975 be has more l3 cache (which in turn means higher IPC)
I will buy PII X4 with AM3 socket mainly due to AMD will release new CPU to same socket and by time AM4 CPU come out, it will work with AM3 sockets just like before. And I think I'm 99% sure that by time X6 comes out, gulftown will be still more expensive than AMD ones.
Well yes. Amd will ALWAYS have competitive prices against Intel.
But AM4 is still very far tho. AM3 is here to stay. That is why I believe going Phenom II 955 is the same as going i5, even tho it's better for gaming to go Phenom (crossfire, consistency)
If you are entertaining the thought of multi-card setups, i7 is the best path. Leave money out of the argument if you are doubling up on video cards and once you alienate expense it only leaves the i7. I wont do it again but they are beastly.
Now here in the real world, you will generally find a more balanced lowest fps and a smoother game feel out of the AMD system. I think it is more apparent with Nvidia cards than AMD's own but the P2 is a sweet gaming CPU. Had every flavor in the past 6 months and wife forced me to choose one to keep and the P2 with a single GTX 295. No indictment of ATI or praise for Nvidia with the choice. It just hooked up great and kept it.
*** ing *** out there.
But I think you didn't consider crossfire the way idid.
Crossfire isnt a waste of money as I said:
You buy a high end card like the HD 5850 lets say for 250.
Now Nvidia release fermi or wtv or ati release the new hecta thingy and u feel kinda low on fps. Thats when crossfire comes in.
You buy ANOTHER HD 5850 this time for 150~180 instead of buying that new gpu at 300~350~400, And u NEARLY reach the performances of that GPU. for what? 180 Max. Even tho Crossfire is a benchmark breaker, I rather consider it as a money saver.
So even tho i7 is REALLY the best cpu out there, it cost a *** load... 250 for mobo,320 for cpu, 110 for ram.
You can get same GAMING performances by going Phenom II 955.
But yes the topic was i5 vs phenom II...i7 is really out of the chart, if you have the money and go phenom II or i5, ur plain stupid..
omg this is not the first time Tom's erase the top of my msg.... It was written: I7 is really the best effing thing out there. But Phenom II is very good for multi GPU with its dual x16 mobos.

That was the original intent of CF and SLI but not many waste their investment of a high end board on mid range and lower cards. Maybe some do but nobody I actually know lol
