if hd 4850 is slightly better than the 4770, why is it priced cheaper than the 4770 for the same 512mb memory?
ant other strong reason than the advantage of low power consumption of the 4770?
and also can anyone explain how well do we benefit from the 40nm tech in the 4770?

the difference in price is due to the scarcity of 4770 on the market compared to the high demand for it. Unlike 4850, 4770 suffers from TSMC's low 40nm yields but performance-wise, 4850 is better than 4770. The benefit of having 40nm production is smaller chip-size thus lower power consumption.

Well i exactly don't know why its cheaper but as u said it maybe because HD 4770 is 40nm and its newer too.
40nm cards like HD 4770 compared to 55nm cards like HD 4850,run cooler and have lower power consumption, that's the benefit of lower nm's

so if im gettin a 1gb of 4850 for the same price as the 512mb of 4770, should i go for the 4850?? im havin a psu of 400w only. will it become too much of a prob? and any idea abt how much is the 4870?

What the F! That's a crappy PSU.

Do yourself a favor and get a better PSU first before planning to buy a video card.

The 4850 is definitely the better video card of those two, but needs a quality 450W PSU to run it. Look for one from Antec, PC Power & Cooling, Seasonic, Corsair, or Enermax. An Earthwatts 430 IS enough; actually Tom's ran a 4850 on an Earthwatts 380, but I don't think I would not do that for an extended period of time because I prefer a little more headroom.
