A friend is building his gaming computer and wanted a 4770 as well.

as most of you know, it's kinda hard to get a hold of the card right now.

checking the always helpful Graphics Card Hierarchy Chart, seems that almost all other cards on par with the 4770 is still a bit too pricey for him. Since we're not from the US, his budget is really tight.

4830s and 4850s are like 20%-30% more expensive than 4770s and show no signs of going down.

3850s are priced around the same as 4770s, but looking at the chart again, seems that performance-wise, it's on par with 4670s but 4670s are much cheaper than 3850s

my question is, is the 4670 a decent card for a person with a tight budget and can't get a 4770?

If 4830, 4850, and 4770 are all too high priced then the 4670 is your best bet.

That card is very decent, and if its all he can afford it seems hes stuck with it. :) The 4770 would be very much worth it if he could save up a little for it though.

Btw the 4770 out-performs the 4830 and is on par if not better than the 4850, which confuses me with the price difference where you're at.

The HD 4670 is decent enough for most games.

In terms of performance: HD 4670 < HD 4830 < HD 4770 < HD 4850

The HD 4770 is indeed more powerful than the HD 4670, but it is not worth the money in terms of performance increase. I would upgrade to a HD 4870 or HD 4890 if his PSU is powerful enough. The HD 5xxx series is expected to be out by Oct/Nov so by then those more powerful cards should be cheaper.

well seems that retailers here are really taking advantage of the shortage of the 4770 and clinching the prices of cards like 3870s, 4830s and 4850s.
4830s and 4850s I could probably understand, but the 3870? :heink:

thanks for all the input guys. I was just wondering if the 4670 was like a lemon card or something or that ATI bogged down the card too much to be good...

can anyone confirm if the 4670 needs an external power supply or is it the same as the 4650 where it gets all the juice from the PCI-E slot?
can't seem to google the answer, or maybe I just suck that much...
