I had a system crash in June and had to move over to a laptop in order to get back to work.

Before transitioning back to my desktop, I'm going to reinstall XP and all of my applications before transitioning. If I'm going to go through all of the effort to reload, I want to make sure the foundation is firm for the future and am prepared to upgrade any components prior to doing so.

Here is my current desktop config:

Motherboard - ASUS p5K
Video - GeForce 8600GT 256mb PCIX
RAM - 4GB DDR2 800GHZ
CPU - Core 2 DUP e6550 2.33 4MB

Obviously most of this can be upgraded regardless of the re-format and XP install, so the priority right now is probably the motherboard, but I'm wondering how this video card is, and if more recent CPUs are going to give me significantly faster performance.

If I swapped motherboards, is there something significantly better that would be worth my doing so?
