surround sound compaq

Hi im a newie to this , my girlfriend has just brought a compaq
presario 2500.
She wants to know if she can get surround sound out of it if she
connects it to her surround sound system.It has a dvd drive and svideo
out so she can get a pic on tv now she wants the sound to go with it.
Shes useing xp home and i noticed you can select the speakers for 5.1
Does this mean if she connects up a lead from it and selects this out
,puts it into her surround system she will have surround in 5.1

Please somebody help ,im not getting any until this is worked out ha
ha .
