The battery icon goes away when you plug the laptop into AC power.

Go to Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Notification Area Icons and check if the Power icon is set to "Show icon and notifications".

this doesnt help, I have no icon showing, and when I get to the area where I can turn on/off icons, the battery icon is blacked out, in the off position, and I cant click on it to turn it on

Turn your laptop off, disconnect the battery and connect it again.
Start your laptop up and check if it's able to be selected now.

Do you already have a solution for this since i have the same problem. It is grayed out, cannot set it to ON position.
