I am looking for a cable router/switch that allows me to share documents/files between each pc I currently have a router that needs replacing.

I also want a print server function.
Which is the best solution? and
i am wondering as to wether there is a difference between a cable and an adsl router because i cannot find subcategories of each

Cable/dsl routers are the same thing. They should both have 1 WAN port and 4,5 or 8 network ports on them.
What you need to watch are the Cable modem and DSL modems. They are different and not interchangeable.

Any SOHO router (Small Office Home Office) will allow you to share files between computers as long as you have the sharing enabled and configured correctly on each computer.
