I am having a problem with my cpu overheating.
I have a rocketfish 700w ps, e6600 2.4 ghz not overclocked, 3gigs 800mhz ocz memory, a brand new hyper silence 775 CPUheatsink, 2 case fans blowing outward, an 8800GTX XFX video card, a p5ne sli mobo, 250 gb seagate hd, and bluray and dvd write optical drive.
My last heatsink suddenly started giving me temps around 70 degrees. I figured that was just my 3 year old heatsink shitting on me. I buy a new heatsink and i get temps of 85 degrees. I figured defective and sent it back to newegg. Bought another one that was very close to my stock fan. It gives me temps of 95 degrees idle. Im thinking wtf is going on? I think the possible problems could be the excess paste all around the processor or the psu since it is a bigger fan blowing directly through the heatsink. Does anyone have any fresh ideas? Oh and im on windows vista 32.
Your windows program will crash at 70-75 celcius; your temp monitoring software may be defective, so if windows is running stable, I wouldn't worry about it. You'll get bluescreens or lock-ups at 75c.
Remove heatsink & proc, clean off the old thermal compound, apply new thermal compound (a blob about the size of a grain of rice smeared over the processor core) re-assemble and see what the temps are.
If they are still around 75 oldie could be right, try running the PC under load and touch the base of the Heatsink with your finger*. 75C will hurt, 95C will hurt quite a bit, failure to feel pain will indicate the board is not reporting the right temp.
*disclaimer , your choice, your finger, your problem. I accept no responsibility etc
Did you make sure that the cooler was properly seated (it should not wobble) and use Arctic silver 5 since it is worlds better than stock compounds that are normally made available.
i did use the stock compounds that was previously applied to the heatsink. It is seated beautifully, it doesnt wobble and i did use a mirror to see that it is seated directly on top of the processor. I think it may be a sensor issue since my processor has reached temperatures in excess of 90 degrees celsius? So i think run the hot finger test and upgrade my bios then calling it clean. Thanks guys.
