Firewire to USB for Data Revovery?

Hello,
Have an elderly and full WD MY BOOK (320MB). Unit has 2 firewire and 1USB ports. Unit appears to be frozen in an "ON" state and WinXP has stopped recougnizing the external HDD.
Lights are on at the WD but no one is home? ( or the doorbell doesn't ring!) T

I think it would be easier to just remove the drive from the enclosure and hook it up directly to your motherboard.
