I have an Acer Travelmate 430 which used to be very quiet. I only use Word
and haven't changed anything on the system, running Windows XP home edition.
A while ago the fan kept coming on every ten, fifteen seconds, really loud,
it drove me crazy. I chequed for dust, but the vent shafts are clean (hell,
it's only a couple of months old). After a week or so things changed for the
better and the thing was as quiet as can be. That is, until a few days ago.
Now I have the same problem, and I don't know how to solve it. Waiting until
it sorts itself out is no option. I need to know what is going on and how it
can be solved... Any ideas?
It doesn't have a mobile cpu, so it seems impossible to reduce cpu speed,
which in a way is strange, for the fan reduces in speed when I switch to
battery life...

Please help, I'm desperate.

When the fan keeps coming on, I would check in Task Manager what
applications are running and especially which ones are using most of the
CPU cycles. You might have a virus, or a worm or some kind of rogue
program. Make sure you run an updated Antivirus and the lastest adaware
file to check your system. That would help identify the problem.

Thanks, but I've done that already. Word is taking up 94% - 99% of cpu.
Nothing else is active. I'm not on the internet with this Notebook, I'm
positive it's virus free.

Dust around CPU?

Found the problem. It was a comprehensive Word document. When it gets to a
certain size, the cpu goes from 0% to 95%. Go figure. If I cut the document
in two pieces, the problem is solved. To me this is strange. The doc. is 700
Kb, which is rather small considering I've got 512 Mb of memory. Can anyone
explain this?

Before you load the document, in tools, options, general, select macro
virus protection. Then load the document. If it asks to allow macros,
select no and see if it makes a difference. An inbedded macro might be
running in a loop.

Word should never take more than a few percent of CPU; it is nearly a
static application without scripting or background operations. There
are two possibilities: FindFast is running; the Windows XP Indexing
service is running. FindFast was a part of Office 97 AIRC. I can be
removed with the Office Installer, and terminated from msconfig.

Start/Run command: type msconfig, select the startup tab. Review each
application startup and uncheck the box for those that have no business
starting: Use this site as a guide:
http://www.pacs-portal.co.uk/startup_content.php

Make a note of each application that you terminate in msconfig. Then
open that application and terminate the autostart from the program
preferences.

So, in summary, it's got a desktop CPU, in a case that's 1/10 of the
size of a desktop PC, and the fans come on alot...

This is why many manufacturers don't scrimp on CPU's and fit proper
mobile CPU's....

....and WTF is your point concerning the OP's problem?

It's possible that you have a virus or spyware that is running in the
background, with the result that the CPU is not spending as much time in
"idle" mode, and is therefore generating more heat.
