Hard drive not detected by BIOS or Win 7 setup

Hard drive was OK then disappeared. Now HD spins but is not detected by BIOS. Is there any hope of recovery?

have you tried replacing the cable,
is this SATA?
is this port set to RAID/AHCI or a normal mode? this will effect how its read. Also i would try plugging it into another machine if you have that handy.
