Looking to build a low budget comp for our daughter.
She uses the comp to fps game, surf the net and chat,
She mainly plays Left 4 Dead, and will get L4d2, she is actually playing on a 2.0gig celeron, 2 gigs ram and nvidia gtx8600 gpu right now, but its kinda iffy at times.

that said I cant find much comparison info on these two amd cpu's, price seems close, but what will be better for gaming now and a little into the future?

I'd suggest the athlon.. 4 cores at this point is irresistible.... also according to a toms hardware review... the athlon is found to be better than phenom 550 in left for dead... future games are going to be designed to utilize more cores...

hence my fingers point towards the athlon :)

I would go with a 550 instead of a 620.... The 550 is by far much faster in games like L4D among others that do not utilize more than 2 cores.

here is a comparison chart :

I play L4D as well and I get more than 100 frames with eye-candy enabled, the x4 would be a great buy if the OP plays games like Crysis, renders, encodes, etc.... If not the 545 or 550 will be more than enough....

If your daughter has a celeron then you will not be able to install an AMD chip on that board. You might want to look at an Intel chip that is compatible with your board.

What are the exact specs of that pc? Please post this info so we can try to come up with a budget mobo and cpu taking into consideration that you might be able to re-use the ram that she is using right now...

I am building a new comp from the ground up, no existing parts will be used in the new setup except for the evga 8600gtx (for now)

I got a great deal on this mid tower case w/ 400 watt ps, Im going to custom paint it for her, not sure if that ps is any good tho

looks like a good build, really good, it will be really beneficail to have a quad since more and more apps are being optimised for multi threading, might i suggest you get the board and the 620 separately and do without the discount?

xaira,
i was thinking of doing that without the $15.00 discount, This will be my first AMD build, I dont know Anything about amd, Im a Intel guy, just built myself a Intel I7-920 oc'd/asus p6t deluxe/ 6 gigs tri channel ram and 2x evga 285 gtx gaming rig, so this AMD thing is new to me, this amd setup has to be tons better then that crappy celeron she has now

Reply to XRWKEN

Either way if you go with the 545 or 620 it will be MUCH better then what she has now....

building a comp is building a comop, you put the mb in the case, install peripheral components and power up, the only diff you will see is in overclocking

I figured the install off it all will be the same old same old, i just dont what squat about what amd is good or bad, then what amd mobos are good or bad, I have been told to stay away from ecs and go for gigabyte mobo

I checked out the case and xoxide. The only stock a few different 400w PSUs. They carry an OCZ 400w, but the others are garbage. If you get that case, make sure you find out which PSU they are putting in it. If they give you a garbage PSU, you'll end up replacing the PSU, and maybe more.

That case also only has a rear fan. It has places you can add fans, but you have to purchase them extra.

The PS model # is a LC-400BTS, which is probably garbage, but $20.00 for the case is not bad. I did buy a 120mm coolermaster fan for the front of the case, so I should get pretty good airflow, pushing in the front and pulling out the back

I would replace it before powering up.

More like uBeR-GarbaGe!!!!!

If you already purchased the case/PSU my suggestion is that you put the PSU on e-bay ASAP....

The OCZ is a nice PSU. They have good quality and good prices.

Coolermaster isn't known for high quality PSUs. I'd stay away until they straighten out.
