Why does Nvidia always release x800 that are comparable to the previous series's 800 cards but for more money? Are they just pretending to release something that might be better when they do 7800 then 8800 then 9800? Granted there is DX10 nowdays (which was a failure imho due to vista requirement for such small marginal visual improvements). Am I hitting the nail on the head when I think they're just trying to charge 100$s of dollars extra just to sell stuff and pretend the performance is worth that much more?

Comparable? GF 7800 to 8800 was a MASSIVE step forward in features, IQ and even more so performance. Really 6800 to 7800 was big too, and 5800 to 6800....we shouldn't need to go there ;)

I think you are only referring to 9800's. 8800GTX vs 9800GTX for example.

You mean 8800 GTS (512mb) vs 9800 GTX. The 8800 GTX used the older G80 chip.

No, actually I meant the G80 8800GTX vs G92 9800GTX, and the halt in performance improvements going from same model (x800 GTX) one series to the next. (GF8 / GF9) I was not referring to G92 8800's and renaming across generations, but that's a good and maybe bigger point in itself.

My mistake. Sorry for misunderstanding your statement :)
