DVD reader/writer stops working during installation?

I have a Biostar Ta790GX A3+ motherboard.
Whenever I install an operating system on my computer, e.g. Windows 7, near the beginning of the install, (where you prepare your hard disks) the install will just sit for about 10 minutes, and the DVD drive stops blinking. It doesn't freeze, it just does nothing. Afterwards, though, it starts back up. But this isn't the case for OSx86 or Ubuntu, (or any distro for that matter) It just sits for hours and hours. In the case of OSX, it says "Still waiting for root device" (the disk drive) over and over and over and over. It does it for hours, and I just give up. The drive IS IDE, and I have 2 HDs on SATA. The drive is set to master on a single IDE cable (not cable select). Does anyone have any ideas? Would it have something to do with AHCI in the bios?

Sys config is as follows:
CPU: Athlon II x4 620
DVD RW - Lightscribe something
HD: Samsung Spinpoint F3
HD: WD caviar SE
PSU: OCZ StealthXStream 500 watt
GPU: Radeon HD4650
Ram: OCZ platinum 1066 DDR3
MOBO: Biostar TA790GX A3+

well since that motherboard doesnt have 2 storage controllers, you gotta either run everything in IDE mode or get a SATA DVD burner.
