Can't find local area connection thru ethernet

Just installed new Asus A8N-SLI mobo with Win XP OS, tried to connect to internet but could not locate a local area connection. I am connecting via a wired ethernet dsl modem. Apparently I should be able to connect the modem to the ethernet port and be ready to immediately connect to the internet. Unfortunately, I have no local area connection appearing in my Network Connections and I do not know what is needed to resolve this problem. Any suggestions?

Thanks Madskilz

Did you check to make sure that the LAN connection is enabled in the BIOS? (it can be turned off and on)
Did you install the LAN drivers that came with the motherboard CD/DVD?

Enabled LAN in bios but still no LocalArea Connection. I dont have motherboard support cd so I'll have to look for drivers. But thanks for the suggestions.
