Now if you get the 2500K then you have more money for a better GPU but it will hurt your rendering editing performance you would get out of the I7. If this is all private, none commercial stuff you are doing then I recommend the I5 but if you are making money with it I7.
Pick a Z68 board with video connections so you can use quick sync if you are serious in your rendering /editing work http://www.anandtech.com/show/4083/the-sandy-bridge-review-intel-core-i7-2600k-i5-2500k-core-i3-2100-tested/8 and http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/sandy-bridge-core-i7-2600k-core-i5-2500k,2833-5.html

Well no, i definitely won't be making money off of anything for the moment, it's all private non-commercial use. I'm not sure how to divide the costs at the moment, because if I try to get the best of each component I'll probably go over my budget. Just trying to stay under $1000 (just for tower and components inside it) and still get a pretty good gaming+editing system running which will last me for the next 1-2 years. The prices I see online are around $230 for the i5-2500k and around $320 for the i7-2500k. Not sure which one to go for. They both support the same amount of RAM which is a good thing and they both got the same socket, so I really don't know. Now that I look at it i500 is pretty high up there too. Also, the i7 has hyper-threading technology which the i5 doesn't.

You think most games that run on the i7-2600k will run on i5-2500k too at around the same fps (maybe a 10-20 fps difference)??? If that is the case, I'll probably go for the i5 since I'll save like 90 bucks.

Ok thanks, what should I be looking at next once I pick the CPU (i5-2500k). Should I be looking at the motherboards first or the graphic card?

From what I've read, the 2500k is on par with the 2600k if no hyperthreading is involved. There are very few programs out at the moment that can even utilize the hyperthreading to its full potential. And as others have said, the difference is better spent on better video card.

If you live close by a Microcenter, they currently have a deal for $179.99 for the 2500k (actually, this deal has been around for a while and I don't think it's going away; on 9/30/11, they actually sold it for $149.99 for two days...yes they lose money on the deal).

If you bundle both of these in your cart, you get $40 off the motherboard:

So $300 plus tax for both a Gigabyte Z68 Mobo and i5 2500k. This mobo can run both SLI and Crossfire. Sweet deal if you live near one of the stores because the CPU is in store purchase only. I think this deal is for the month of October. There's also an additional $10 rebate on the mobo.

Too bad they ran out of the mobo here in the Santa Clara store. Luckily I had a coworker who was on travel to Orange County and he helped me pick up from the store in Tustin. Will be getting it this evening. Can't wait! I only wish i bought this deal on 10/1/11 to have saved another $30 on the CPU.
