hello!

Basically, my hard drive is starting to become noisy, so i'm trying to perform a backup so I can eventually replace the hard drive and also do a clean reinstall of windows.
When I put the external hard drive or any other flash drive in a usb port (M4A88T-M motherboard), it comes up with a pop up saying 'this device can perform faster if your connect it to a Hi-Speed USB 2.0 port'
All usb ports are 2.0, and two ports are 3.0, none make any difference.
The hard drive temperamentally shows up, and when it does, clicking on it freezes windows explorer.
I've read that a fresh install of windows will help, but i'm wondering whether it's a motherboard fault?
I have also tried a system restore, each time/date comes up with an error after restoring.
In device manager, two 'Standard Enhanced PCI to USB Host Controller' devices have warning triangles over them.

will be very grateful if someone could lend me a hand!

The warning triangles might be resolved by reloading the USB drivers. That might also solve the message. You might have to do that again for the USB 3 ports, since they have drivers that are in addition to the "regular" drivers.

Both are less important than the problem of Windows Explorer freezing. Is the bad hard drive an internal or external? The statement about the message has me confused on which it is. If it is external, or you can put it into an external enclosure, plug it in to another machine to try it. That eliminates Windows, the motherboard, and a LOT of other possibilities as the cause.

If it is making noise, do this immediately since SOMETIMES they go out very soon after they start making noise. Yes, so times it takes a long time, but don't take that chance.

I also encounterd same problem, but in my case there is no error symbol(triangle with exclamation). Everything seems to be perfect, i talk to the HP customer care, they asked me to update chipset and BIOS. Thoug i updated the chipset (No update of BIOS for my comuter model) , i could not see any difference. Later they concluded that it could be due to mother board. OS may not be the region in my case. I have one external disk, in which linux is loaded, there also the trasfer (from pen drive to hard drive and vice versa) rate is very low.

Before chaning the motherboard(it is a bit expensive), I would like to know any other possibility. Please let me know the solution if you come across.
