Hello,

I just got done building my new gaming rig 2 days ago. Everything was running great with Asus mobo/AMD X4 955BE/ G-skill ddr3 ram/WD Caviar Black 640 GB/Sapphire 4870/Windows 7 RC and I played some games at max graphics successfully and everything was going fine.. Until the computer just randomly dies 2 days later while I working on my laptop in another room. At the time that it died, the new comp was running a antivirus scan (it had been doing a deep scan for almost 3 hrs when it died) and I was download a torrent at the same time. Which are some HD intensive processes..

When I tried to turn on the computer again and check the POST message it got stuck on auto-detecting SATA 1, which is my harddrive.. I tried a few times but it could never find it and booting the OS is not possible. So my question is.. Is my hard drive dead and gone?? or did something else go wrong.

Thanks in advance!!

As soon as you hear the single beep (successful POST), enter the BIOS and see if you can detect the drive manually. If you cannot, that is a sign that the computer cannot recognize the drive controller.

At the BIOS checking point, all the computer is doing is checking the controller. It is not accessing the drive until the boot process starts.

Check your sata cables as well. I always use sata 2 cables with the clip on them as they provide for a "better grip" of the drive's interface contact surface. Heat causes thermal expansion and this could possible cause a poor contact to get worse and cause the drive to "disappear"
