which is better phenom 2 x2 550 be or athlon 2 x4 620... please help me decide which one should i buy... asus M4A785TD-V EVO,4 G ddr3, 500 seagate,OCZ fatality 700 watts...
Both stock, go with the quad. Even if you could unlock the 550 into its own quad, one could assume you would have the know how to OC the 620, so all things being equal, the factory quad will do you good.
i'd go with theneomaster... and buy a phenom... for games any day phenom kicks athlon's butt... see and search around the toms hardware articles... u'll know what i mean

However there will be soon, techonology moves on so fast now.
So in my opinion, get a quad. In a couple years time, games will be coming out with quadcore minimum spec and you will have to fork out for a new computer. At least quadcore is futureproofed for a good while.
As theneomaster said, soon games will start using quad core cpus. Also if something pops on a computer (like say anti virus) you cpu will tell the second program to run on the next available core/tread so your games (in theory) wont slow down.

All the reviews I have read about the athlon IIs vs Phenom IIs shows a minor difference in performance, well compensated by the lower price, and does not cripple gameplay. If a game will play well with a Phenom II, it will not tank with the comparative Athlon II. I applaud the Athlon IIs, I think they are welcome part of the puzzle that is getting PC gaming back into a growth phase.
The performance to be had from a budget dragon platform is astounding (785g, AII x4, 5750/70) and I hope AMD gets rewarded by the market for giving PC gamers such an affordable entry point into quality current gen gaming.
I personally think that the multicore athlons are a good choice, it just depends on what you want to use it for. In my opinion, if you are spending a large amount of cash on a gaming machine, don't bother with dual cores/athlons. Like I said before, in a couple of years, you will look back and wish you had saved a little more and gone for the bells and whistles, the quadcore/phenom. This is precisely the reason for my purchase of the PII X4 940.
