I will be getting a AMD Phenom II 955/965 next. Right now I have a x3 710 Phenom II, and one of my buddies wants to buy it. So I'll just keep on my upgrade path. I love that I built this computer 3 years ago and I'm still on the same socket(AM2/AM2+). I'll probaly be on this computer for another 2 years yet. No complete overhaul, FTW. :)

I voted for Phenom II even though I have one now, but since you didn't include any future CPUs (like I9 or Phenom II X6) that have yet to come out I had to pick it. And I definitely don't have a reason to upgrade to any of the chips listed above as it would only be a downgrade in what I do. So yeah :)

x4 955 will be my next CPU unless the Thuban comes out to be a BE CPU at a reasonable price...

Also, you needed to include Athlon II X2, X3 and X4, Athlon X2's (Kuma), Athlon X2's (Brisbane, Windsor), Athlon 64 X2's (Toledo), I3, Celeron Dual Core etc. You haven't included many CPUs :(

Running an E8400 at the moment, will probably go i7 with my next build in about a years time. OC'd core 2 should last fine until then.

I'm holding out for Thuban, or, at the very least, a Phenom II X4 Black Edition with a sub-100W TDP. Anybody know when those are coming out, by the way?

I plan to upgrade to the new 32nm Clarkdale in Q1 2010 (unless I hear bad things, or its not available). Failing that then it'll be i7.

add xeon/opteron family

I go dual Xeon btw :]

^Is a good option too, but i don't think that I need too much. Actually I have a Phenom II X4 955 BE, maybe change it for a i7...or a new better AMD that fight with the i7 or i5...

If you change a 955 to an I7 (or otherwise, I7 to PII) you are the stupidest person in the f'ing world and I will give you a huge medal! I adore moronic people!

jajaja just was an opinion, and you also have a 955 to 3.8GHz (like me) with a big difference, my problem is my mobo (i think)

I didn't try to be insulting, but IF you change a PII 955 to i7 because you are unhappy with performance or in hopes you will get a boost, you are deluded. If, however, you changed your mind and want an Intel platform because of compatibility or something I fully appreciate it.

I didn't say directly you are a moron. I said if you change to an I7 in hopes of super higher performance you are either deluded or a total moron.

Well it was directed at you so of course it sounded insulting :P Either way, if you can't get that I am only saying if you get an I7 over PII in hopes of a huge performance boost (and your system works okay and you don't have a reason to replace so you can consider another platform), you are stupid. It's simple. If you have an unstable system and in the end changed your mind that you wanted an I7 that is your choice. Got me now?

My plan for my next cpu ugprade will be the core i9 which is not an option on your poll. Otherwise, the most likely chocie will be the i7 960

What do you have now? And besides if your getting an i7 9xx, get the 920... the rest are basically rip offs. The only i7 9xx chip that has a slight difference is the 975, which is $1000!

Reply to yannifb

Already have a Phenom II X4, but I'm thinking of replacing an Athlon X2 with an Athlon II X4 thats in another one of my computers. I'm also interesting in Thuban as the extra cores should help in rendering.

My vote will be
"None of these".

I can add that in, as well as i9 if you want to look into the future a bit. However, it will reset the poll.

Unless there's a much better reason to switch to Westmere than it looks right now, I'll probably wait until Sandy Bridge to upgrade.

The next step up for me would be the i7 950 (£450) but i could overclock my 920 to that speed so i dont think theres any point. If i do buy one it will be after I get a new GPU!

Immature of me, but I always thought the name Sandy Bridge sounded odd.
Last thing I want a bridge to be is sandy. Fall right through.

When is the bridge due?

A bit over a year - probably sometime around Q4 '10 to Q1 '11. Unfortunately, it'll probably require a new mobo...

I have a q9550 OCed to 3.91ghz right now. that's why I'm giving it some time before my next upgrade. Besides, I'm pretty sure the price will be more than reasonable for a 960 when I upgrade

i5 750 for me. Its sat at home ready to all be put together. Just have to wait for my backup to finish, to get a 6 pin graphics card power adapter and to get the time to do it. Can't wait!

You should have gotten a Phenom II... :D JK, your choice.

Make sure you have the power supply to handle things, most of the better units come with 6 and 8 pin PCI-Express power connectors standard.

I think a AMD Phenom II 955 would be just right for my needs (Gaming),
and after the recent Price cut from AMD, it looks a much more sweet deal now :)

No choice for waiting on an Intel i9 8 core?

Right now my i7 920 works just fine. So if I ever bothered to upgrade, it would have to be for the distant future version of the i9.

Realistically my next chip will probably be a Pringles. Mainly 'cuz I'm out of Doritos. :D

However I am still planning on an i920 build 'real soon now', although if Intel would just release a 32nm quad Nehalem at the same price, I'd get that. I don't really need a 6+ core Westmere, but 2 cores is two too little. Et tu?

My next CPU will be a i7 920 I think although I might get an extra Phenom II 955 to upgrade one of my older systems.

I want to get an Athlon II X4 (a budget issue)

Reply to dia-j

If budget allows: The 95W 945 Phenon II X4
If it doesn't: Athlon X4 620
