Looking to Build Gaming Rig on Budget

I'm a big time online gamer, but my system is dated. (2004 or so with only minor upgrades) And now i am having lag issues in many of the games i play (CoD and World Of Warcraft) I'm looking to build a good gaming rig that will last me a while for between $800-$1000. I've never done anything as far as building a computer goes so any tips would be great. Thanks.
