Can anyone recommend a good USB to Serial converter for these new
Thinkpads that don't have serial ports! I need it for mainly terminal
type access programs (Hyperterminal, Reflections, etc.)

Type "usb serial converter" in ebay search; there are many you can "buy it
now" for under $20 including shipping.
I haven't bought one yet as I haven't a need for one so far. Let us know
how it works if you get one.

but then, why not buy such an adapter from a reputable store? Seems to
me, for a low value article, risks and shipping costs are not worth the
savings.

I have one Belkin Serial to USB converter that works very well on a
Sony, HP, and Averatec laptops all with XP Home for syncronizing Palms
and scanning radio controls. Only the Averatec is USB2.

First, there is no guarantee that any of them will work. None of these
are "real" serial ports that are programmable at the register level.
Whether they will work depends on the software being used (on the
laptop) to drive them. My experience has been about 50-50. The device
being connected to and the software being used is MUCH more of an issue
than the USB adapter itself, in my own experience.

I've had good success with a Belkin USB to serial converter on all of my
late model Thinkpads, but I've found that success is determined more by the
software you need to run and the OS you're running it under.
XP seems a _bit_ more compliant than W2K, and W98SE is simply hopeless.
I'm afraid I have no experience with terminal programs as I primarily use
the adapter with GPS programs and receivers.

I bought one of those when i got my t41 and tried to plug my serial gps into
it.. ; )
Problem is.. i don't remember the brand.. (it was a wierd one) and the
brand isn't on the dongle i bought..
I've seen ones that look exactly like it from IOGear. I've had very little
trouble with it.. think it cost me.. $25
I think what you're lookin for is a pretty simple device (mine didn't even
come with a driver disk.. xp just found it) so you could probably look for
form factor/whatever's cheapest and be alright.

here's another question for you though... has anyone found a good serial to
bluetooth converter??
thinkin i might scratch the wired thing and just use bluetooth with my gps.

Search for "Socket PCMCIA Serial" cards on Ebay, they are the only
almost
"guaranteed" to work, as they contain an actual UART chip, same as the
older laptops. With persistence you can get one for under $50. I got
one of the "ruggedized" ones new for $45. Barry Watzman put me onto
this card and I use it on my new R40 Thinkpad with my older Motorola
cellphone to access web. Very well made, worth the money.

A more expensive, but possible convenient alternative, is a port
replicator. I use one to connect my serial stuff and a printer at my
desk. I also leave the usb diskette drive plugged into it.

Thanks for all the replies. I'm asking because our company bought
about 50 IBM T41 laptops, and if I buy a "bunch" of those adapters, I
want the best available. From the sounds of it, they're all about the
same until I go with a PC Card, which I want to avoid.
Thanks again.

There are "USB based" port replicators from such mfrs as Targus. Check with
CompUSA or Office Depot online.
