Internet Explorer not working/Firefox works

Alright, so I'm running Windows 7, and everything was working fine... now, Internet Explorer will not connect to anything, not even my own router. Firefox on the other hand will connect, do everything, etc. Most games, etc that rely on multiplayer or updates via internet also cannot connect, yet my Instant messenger client (Pidgin) can.

Any ideas on what could be causing this catastrophe?

Not that I'm aware of. IE is set to automatically detect settings and Firefox is set to No proxy. It's an odd problem, if you ask me. Firefox and Pidgin (both open source, but I believe that may be irrelevant) work, but games, internet explorer, windows update, and software updates cannot access the internet whatsoever. Only thing built into Windows that seems to be working on a network level would be the command prompt.

I found a fix that takes care of all the network problems.
Simply go to Internet Explorer > Tools > Internet Options
Connections > Lan settings
Uncheck "Automatically detect settings"

This fix solved all network problems. Games, applications, everything works now!
