I recently bought an XFX 4870 1gb card for my new build. Unfortunatly i was stupid enough to not check the compatibility with my PSU. Its a generic cheap PSU and although it produces 620w it doesnt have any 6 pin connectors only 4 pin. The 4870 came with 4 to 6 pin adaptors which is odd because the manual states the card does NOT support them? Is it safe to use the 4 to 6 pin adaptors, or do i need a new PSU? If i do need a new PSU does anyone reccomend a good cheap one? (i will not be using crossfire so there is no need to cater for this). My build is as follows
It would be better if you tell us how many amps the psu is producing.
If it is producing enough amps, then using the adapter will be ok. If not, then rather than risk loosing your whole system, get a new, better quality psu.
I think the doubts would diminish greatly if people would stop buy crappy power supplies. Go ahead and plug 2 molex connectors onto each of the "Y" splitters ( hope you have 2 of them because the card needs 2 to run )............ and see what happens. At worst the system won't boot.
Actually, not to scare the OP, but the worse that can happen is that he plugs everything in, it boots and works for 3 months, then after some heavy use the PSU gives out and takes everything else with it.
Thanks for the input guys. Seeing as the adaptors may well cause me problems I've decided to "do the job properly" and purchase a Tagan TG480-U01 PSU instead.
