I am trying to get my 6-year old computer a bit longer to live. I have the MSI KT3 Ultra (MS-6380e). I have never overclocked. I am just wondering about the best processor I can stick in there.

This list tells me I can only use the AthlonXP 2600+ 133MHz processor. I also know I can manually set the FSB to 200MHz which makes me wonder if I could throw in the Barton core 3200+ at 200MHz. Would this hurt the processor/mobo/RAM?

Thanks for any advice! :)

I wouldn't go that high. The 3200 generates more heat, requiring a better heatsink. Starmicro has the mobile 512k 2400 for $40, which is about all I would risk on such an old motherboard. If you know how to change a motherboard, take your ddr ram and use it on a 754 or 939 setup. The 939 single cores are cheap; the trick is finding a board to go with them. Only a few are left.

The cheapest option is to buy a better heatsink/fan and overclock that CPU to it's max.
