New animation pc help

I am building a new PC and I wanted to know if this is more than enough for a highend workstation.

motherboard - ASUS P6T Deluxe V2 LGA 1366 Intel X58 ATX Intel Motherboard

processor - Intel Core i7-975 Extreme Edition Bloomfield 3.33GHz 4 x 256KB L2 Cache 8MB L3 Cache LGA 1366 130W Quad-Core Processor

memory - CORSAIR XMS3 12GB (6 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10600) Desktop Memory Model HX3X12G1333C9

hard drive - Western Digital Caviar Black WD6401AALS 640GB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

graphics card - PNY VCQFX4000-PB Quadro FX4000 256MB 256-bit GDDR3 AGP 4X/8X Workstation Video Card

sound card - HT | OMEGA STRIKER 7.1 Channels 24-bit 96KHz PCI Interface Sound Card

computer case - Antec Twelve Hundred Black Steel ATX Full Tower Computer Case

power supply - CORSAIR CMPSU-750TX 750W ATX12V / EPS12V SLI Ready CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS Certified Active PFC Compatible with Core i7 Power Supply

dvd/cd drive - Sony Optiarc Black 24X DVD+R 8X DVD+RW 12X DVD+R DL 24X DVD-R 6X DVD-RW 12X DVD-RAM 16X DVD-ROM 48X CD-R 32X CD-RW 48X CD-ROM 2MB Cache SATA DVD/CD Rewritable Drive

cables for drives - Nippon Labs 18" (1.5 ft.) SATA II Cable with locking latch Model SATA-L0.5-R

I might want to change out my hard drives, one for just my os and apps and the other for storage.
I am also wondering if liquid cooling or fan cooling would be good choice for the cooling of the pc.
This was a total of 2750 for this rig without the cooling unit. I compared this to a lot of companies out there and they charge a lot for a rig similar to this.

Thanks for your help.

  1. Where are you going to be getting the parts from? Newegg?

Also first glaring issue i see, that quadro card is an AGP card, there are no LGA 1366 boards that have an AGP slot so you are going to need to get one of the higher end ones that uses a PCI-E slot. If you are going to be doing animation work you should probably get a good sound card, the sampling rate on that HT card is a bit low.
Depending on the price of that 12GB kit it may be cheaper to get 2 6GB kits but it depends on where you are buying from.

Generally we suggest the i7 920 and then over clocking it as it is so much less expensive compared to the 975. If you post where you are buying from im sure i can dig up some combos that will help you save a bit of money.
  2. Thanks for the fast response. This is just my first list so there will be revision hopefully getting the cost down too. :P

Forgot to mention that I was thinking of running vista 64 bit then I saw windows 7, I am running xp pro since I couldn't make the change to vista.

I will be ordering from Newegg unless I find the parts cheaper some other place.

Man.. didn't even think about that, thanks for the heads up on the quadro card. What would you suggest if my budget would be $3,000?

That is a nice sound card. I will do more research on that.

I will look around for memory, looks like there are more options when buying 2 6GB kit.

For the processor that would definitely help out with the motherboard combo.

    Thanks hunter315
  3. Okay, first im going to link to everything you were considering, this is so i can price it out and see how we can tweak things here and there, and for future reference so i dont have to go digging through newegg to find the parts in the future.

    Mobo $290
    CPU $1k
    RAM $240
    HDD $75
    GPU $550
    Sound Card $90

Case, PSU, and optical drives are fine. As for the work station card, im going to have to find the article toms did on them, but any from this selection will fit.

This combo saves you $760 on the CPU and motherboard alone

2 kits of OCZ platinum at $115 saves you $10

If you want to get 2 caviar blacks for a RAID setup then you can get two of these combos

The xonar costs $90 extra before rebate but provides double the sampling rate. As for the cooler for overclocking
It gets rated second by frostytech
