Windows xp cannot switch between users

I've been running XP with two users quite happily for a number of years.
A couple of days ago I downloaded AVG's antivirus 2012 update and took advantage of the free PC Tuneup - now I can't switch users. I have certainly tidied my PC up a lot but I don't know what setting I changed but now I can't switch but need to log off. I've done the standard thing of control panel then user accounts and change the way users log on or off. I set the Use fast user switching flag and apply options but this doesn't seem to take. If I look again, the option is unset.
Can anyone help? It's very frustrating having to close all my programmes and log off just for my wife to check her emails!

PS: If you need to "tidy up", suggest simply using the Windows disk cleanup.
Those 3rd party tuneup packages use a registry cleaner, and it is not really desirable to run those things !

I agree. If you don't know which registry keys are being edited or don't understand what those keys do, those cleaners will do more harm than good.

Perhaps better written software [and manuals] would help.
