I'm very close to getting a dell ultrasharp 2290wa as everyone seems to be bashing one out over it but im a bit worried by the limited 1680x1050 resolution i dont want to be at the stage where my pc hardware can comfortably handle resolutions on games greater than this but is held back by the monitor if that makes sense?

im on a core2duo 6600 (oc'd to 3ghz)
8800GTS 320mb
2gb ram
1280x1024 viewsonic vx922

Yes my current setup can just about run oblivion on 1280x1024 with everything on high except AA/bloom/HDR but ill be upgrading in the near future to 4gb of ram and probably a ATI 4890 or whatever the latest card under £150 is.
will i end up with a rig capable of more than the monitor? ill expect that setup to last me at least another 3 years and after than ill change everything including the monitor.
i do like to play alot of the older games like max payne/half life/guild wars etc and can understand id obviously be able to play them higher than i can go but if we were to just look at the latest games would the upgraded pc outstrip the monitor?

Minimum resolution should only be a problem if you require a lot of desktop space. For gaming 1680x1050 is adequate, heck you could play games today at 1024x768 and you really wouldn't be missing a lot (when compared to the same 4:3 aspect ratio).

It wont be an issue, would you rather have a system ea silly capable of maxing out games at native res, or would you rather get a bigger monitor and then have to reduce Res and settings to get a playable frame rate when the next PC killer game gets released ?

If you decide on that resolution, your "near future" to upgrade your video card just got nearer. Your new framerates will suddenly be sluggish with that old card. And your e6600 will bottleneck a 4890.

Thanks for the replys, obviously i wouldn't expect to be maxing out the new monitor i'd still be gaming at 1280x1024 on oblivion etc. or whatever was comfortable till the upgrade.

any idea on how much the E6600 would hold a 4890 back? i'd really like to avoid upgrading the cpu if possible.

I think half my problem is ive never used or seen a widescreen before so have no concept of how it would look or be like to game on at widescreen resolutions, is 1680x1050 enough for a 22"? some comments ive read on forums say no. im hate to drop £200 on a screen and regret it a few months down the line.

thanks for any advice

It's already at 3ghz, when i built the system and oc'd it in the beginning i think it didn't like going over 3, im not sure if i even made it into windows. I only changed the FSB, im a bit warey of pissing about with voltages etc.

I have a 23" monitor and my desktop is at 1920x1080p

I play most of my games at 1680x1050. I play Crysis maxed out on my 2nd monitor at a 1280x1024 resolution.

I actually play all my online games at 1280x1024 since it's easier to rack up kills.
I also like to play Counterstrike Source at 1024x768.
