8600 gts make an intense amount of heat. i used to have it.

you need to see what your power supply is

if you have a Psu thats atleast 425 watts, go with ati and get a mid range GPu.

Sorry for the double post but

Doing some looking I was leaning towards one of these three:

BFG BFGE981024GTGE NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GT 1 GB GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 Graphics Card with EcoIntelligence Low Power Design (http://www.amazon.com/BFG-BFGE981024GTGE-GeForce-Graphics-EcoIntelligence/dp/tech-data/B00288BH9K/ref=de_a_smtd)

or

EVGA GeForce 8800 GTS Video Card - 512MB, PCI Express 2.0, SLI Ready, (Dual Link) Dual DVI, HDTV (http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=4786531&csid=ITD&body=MAIN#detailspecs)

or

EVGA GeForce GTS 250 Video Card - 512MB GDDR3, PCI Express 2.0, (2) Dual Link DVI, SLI Ready
(http://www.compusa.com/applications/searchtools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=4494046&csid=ITD&body=MAIN#detailspecs)

but then again I don't know much about computing x.x
