A question about watching TV through my PC. Not sure that's exactly a HTPC question, but what do I need to do? I'm pretty sure they make tuner cards for the PC. Is that all I need besides the cable box? Or am I smoking crack and that's not possible? Any help would be appreciated. I'm clueless when it comes to this end of building.

Assuming I'm not smoking crack, suggestions on a decent tuner card on the cheap would be great.

Thanks in advance.

EDIT: Won't need to record or anything. Cable box has DVR.

though you could try to get a cablecard tuner, see if your provider has one then you could watch/record without the box (one less box maybe two if you use it for DVD/BD)

Ok, so help me out here. With a cablecard tuner, no need for the cable box? Otherwise, if I just buy a tuner card, (one cheaper than you one you listed preferably) the cable box would plug into it? Sorry, never done this before. No extra TV for the bedroom, so I figured it'd be worth it.

Thanks for any help.

Cable card tuners are very rare. Thanks to the big media companies, they are only available to OEM's (Dell, HP, etc) for pre-built media-PC's. You'll probably have to scour eBay to find a used one for sale from a system pull.

The regular tuner cards that are for sale, like the one above, are for us DIY builders. Most are able to accept a ATSC signal (OTA HDTV local channels, clear-QAM non-encrypted digital cable channels) and a NTSC signal (standard, basic cable channels).

If you want to get encrypted channels like HBO, you'll need to connect your set-top box to the tuner card

What kind of broadcast are you planning on watching on your computer? If it's over-the-air digital TV, then it's as simple as purchasing an ATSC tuner card, install it, and connect a good antenna. Windows XP MCE, Vista Premium, and Windows 7 Premium have media center software that will allow you to watch TV.

Here's a site that will give you a good rundown of what tuners are capable of:

rwpritchett, thanks for the great info. Only channels I'm really concerned about are local channels, sports channels, like FoxSports and ESPN, and channels like Disney for the kids.

I noticed some of the tuner cards on newegg came with antennas. Are the antennas hard to find if it doesn't? Thanks for the link.

I just built an HTPC about a month ago. You don't need a turner card. Most programs are streamed for free over the internet including sports if you have a good high speed connection hard wired in. As for movies I use Netflex. With Hulu you can find lots of old stuff to watch for free. Most networks ABC, NBC, Fox, and CBS will have there new programs for viewing the day after it airs. Some local stations stream there news live. Most of the major cable channels like what you mentioned stream there programing to. The great thing about watching programs this way is you can watch what you want when you want with out using TIVO.

I haven't cut the cable cord just yet but were getting close to it. We have dropped down to just basic and give them back there box.

A little more help if you don't mind. The morons at Time Warner Cable told me they had cable tuner cards only to find out it was what appeared to be an old pcmcia card that plugged into a Tivo or a TV. Not exactly what I needed.

What I'm trying to figure out is will the cable box plug into a tuner card if it has the coax connection. From the link rwprichett provided, it would seem the answer is yes, but I'd sure like ot have more info on what I'm getting into before I spend money on a tuner card. I'm continuing to research, but anything someone could provide would be great.
