graphic characters instead of text

Please explain in more detail, such as what software you are using, and what the exact problem is.

Windows XP Dell Inspiron E1505
When Windows comes up -- the graphic portion is OK -like the Icons and etc -- but the text associated with them has graphic charcaters. Also when I use the the keyboard the letters come out graphical.

Did it work before? If so, what did you do right before this problem first occurred? Did you change the system font?

The more I think of it, the more I think he system font has been changed. To change the system font back to the default, do this:

Right click on the desktop, and choose Properties (should be the bottom choice).
On the Themes tab (the leftmost tab), there is a drop-down box. Choose the third or forth option.
Hit Apply (the bottom right button).

Hopefully the font problem will be fixed.
