Alright, I've got a new build coming sometime this week. I've been operating on XP Pro for the last 7 years. I'll be installing Win7 Pro, and a new WDBlack 500gb HDD. I would like to copy over all my files and programs. Is it as simple as plugging the external into the computer, and moving them to the new blank disc? Can I do it without moving XP? Will there be any compatibility issues moving from a 32bit to a 64 bit OS? Will any I have to reinstall program,s or can they just move to the new HDD?

its easy getting your files over but your programs will need to be reinstalled on the new system (if they'll run under win7)

Dont forget to copy your mail, Internet favorites, passwords, saved games...
Often its best to have the old computer handy for a week or two so you can go back and get stuff you forgot about.
