All:
Not really sure if this is a good place to start, but I'll give it a shot. I recently built a new system and Windows 7 is the first OS I've put on it.
Processor: AMD X4 955 at 3.2 GHz
Motherboard: Gigabyte MA790XT-UD4P
In the BIOS pretty much everything is left as default and the BIOS detects 3200MHz clock speed. However, in Win7, the System profile is only showing 1.60GHz. Running the performance index thing that Win7 comes with, also rates the processor pretty low.
Any ideas why clock speed is low? Missing drivers?
You have Cool n quiet enabled in the bios. When not being heavily used it downclocks the cpu to lower heat and power consumption. When you start doing something more cpu intensive it will automatically bring it back up to full 3.2ghz speed. You can disable it in bios if you want.
Thanks all for the feedback, but I did try disabling Cool 'n Quiet and still can't get Windows System Info or CPU-Z to show me anything that indicates things are running at normal clock speeds. See link below...
Mobo was given in original post (Gigabyte MA790XT-UD4P). But I found the issue. Mobo needed a BIOS update in order to clock X4 955 (and memory?) correctly. Upgraded to F6 BIOS, loaded Optimized settings, and I seem to be good to go.
