DVD ROM Drives Not Detected

I recently bought a HP xw4300 workstation. It came with an internal DVD ROM drive, to which I added another DVD ROM drive, a Samsung model SM-308.

The computer basically decides when and when not to recognize the drives.

I have checked the master/slave jumpers and fixed them (the first on the IDE channel master, the second slave) but the problem persists. I have heard this can be the result of the drives conflicting with ANOTHER piece of hardware, but I'm not sure which. Therefore, I tried making both of them the slaves, but with no avail.

In fact, I added then removed a floppy drive, which might have convinced the comp that it was the master, even if it is not plugged in.

I desperately need a solution to this problem, please help!

[EDIT] what about drivers? Perhaps this could be related to my other problem: http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/53776-2-boot-problems

Thanks!

1- check in bios if detected / might need to reset the bios also
2- try jumpers settings on cable select, had issues with HP where master/slave didn't work but cable select did
3- check to see if cable is set correctly (if cable a bit short)
4- those are IDE drives right

5- try the new one as master alone to see if its not defective

good luck
