Hello
Reason for buying a new PC now is that I want a test machine for number of different OSes but it will also be my primary day-to-day computer.
I've used the template below to outline what I'm looking for and Proximon's guide to have a go at picking parts.
Main concern is that there will be product launches in the next few months that'll offer more value than what I've gone for here. Core i5 maybe?
I'll be expecting to get good performance from this machine for at least a couple of years. Based on the fact that my current machine is a 1600MHz Pentium M based laptop I'll probably look to squeeze as much life out of the new PC as possible. I don't play games these days which I imagine will help with the systems lifespan.
APPROXIMATE PURCHASE DATE: Tomorrow to 3 months
BUDGET RANGE: £600 which I reckon is equivalent to approx $800 given higher component costs here in UK
SYSTEM USAGE FROM MOST TO LEAST IMPORTANT: Virtualisation (using VirtualBox or similar), surfing web, online video, encoding music and video. Photoshop.
I don't play games very often these days
PARTS NOT REQUIRED: Generic stuff like keyboard, mouse, DVD drive I can pick myself
PREFERRED WEBSITE(S) FOR PARTS: UK ones.
LambdaTek
Dabs
PARTS PREFERENCES: None really.
OVERCLOCKING: Yes, be silly not to wouldn't I?
SLI OR CROSSFIRE: No
MONITOR RESOLUTION: Not sure, native resolution on chosen monitor I guess. 1920x1080 probably.
ADDITIONAL COMMENTS: This will probably be in living room so quiet would be good. Open to suggestions for quiet CPU fan if that'll help.
Using Proximon's guide I came up with this
Intel Core 2 Duo E7400 2.80GHz LGA775 FSB1066 3Mb
ASRock P45XE Motherboard Intel LGA 775
OCZ DDR2 PC2-8500 Blade Series
Antec THREE HUNDRED EU TOWER CASE
Antec EARTHWATTS EA-500 UK
Western Digital HD Caviar SE/640GB SATA III 7200rpm 16MB
Asus VH222H, 21.5" widescreen 1920x1080, 5ms, 1000:1, HDMI, DVI, Dsub, 2W x 2 stereo, RMS
Thanks in advance for any advice
