I'm about to order a new gaming PC, which I'm hoping to use for 3 years. My only sticking point is the RAM. Currently, the specs are:

Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit
AMD Phenom II X4 945
Sapphire HD 5850
1TB Hard Drive
750w Power Supply

Since I want this PC to play games for 3 years, how much RAM should I put in?

I would stick with 4GB of RAM. For gaming, there is no real benefit in more than 3GB's of RAM, so 4GB (2x2GB) gives you dual channel memory and will be effective.

You don't list a MOBO but I would recommend this RAM, if getting DDR3... G.SKILL ECO Series 4GB (2 x 2GB) 2DDR3 1333

+1 for 4gb RAM for gaming. I run 8gb RAM, but I do a lot of VM stuff for work as well.

However, Windows 7 does a great job of caching most of my 8gb RAM. It was worth the upgrade, imo.
