Tweaking the net

I am wanting to tweak my internet, any programs that you personally recommend or any guides suggestions are welcome. I only have a 56k modem, and this is my second question, does anyone know any sites that will tell me how to tweak the diamon supraexpress 56e PRO (external) modem or alternatively exactly what each of the 8 lights on it stands for (i know only the meaning of the power)
